APPRENTICES
Decent work is a human right and while young people remain firmly in the sights of the government, young employees need protection.
That’s the bad news.
The good news is that getting organised in the workplace can help – and more young people than ever before are organising.
WHAT A UNION CAN DO FOR YOU ?
Young people deserve decent work.
Whether you’re flipping burgers, waiting tables, working in a call centre or a high street shop – every worker deserves decent wages, good working conditions and to be treated fairly, and with respect.
Whatever job you do now, or in the future Unite is the union that will be on your side– we have members in every type of workplace.
THE REALITY
Many young people are trapped in low paid and low-skilled jobs – and suffer from the insecurity they bring.
Some of these jobs offer no guarantee of when you will be working or whether you will be paid. How are people expected to live their lives in such a way?
JOINING A UNION CAN GIVE YOU CHOICES
For hundreds of years, unions have been the best way for working people to protect one another.
Yet, in many modern-day workplaces, there is no union to defend workers and bosses are free to exploit their staff. It doesn’t have to be this way!
Just because you are young and starting your employment journey, it doesn’t mean you have no rights at work or that you shouldn’t be treated fairly.
A union is about workers working together and, when we work together, we can fight for the things that matter to you.
A union is people coming together, to use strength in numbers, to get things done giving you a voice on matters that affect you at work.
Union members receive better pay and working conditions than non-union members.
A union is like a club - when you join Unite, we want you to get involved, learn about what’s important to you, share your ideas and solutions on how to solve problems… and make change happen together.
A union helps keep you safe and secure at work.
Basic rights - such as secure hours, sick pay, holiday pay, job protection and workplace safety – are our priority and help keep our union members safe at work.
A union can back you up at work.
If you have a problem you can go and see them and get Advice about pay, hours and unfair treatment.
We make sure everyone at work is being treated fairly and with dignity free from bullying, harassment and discrimination. Union members are also entitled to expert legal representation should you need it!
Unions make sure you get training and development at work – to learn about your rights and to build links with other young people and organisations.
You’ll also have the opportunity of becoming a union representative.
A Union helps you campaign for change in the workplace and in the community looking at ways we can tackle low pay, prevent the abuse of zero hours contracts and how we can win decent work for all.
A Union unites working class people and communities' to fight together on political issues that affect them all.
A Union means that you are strong and not alone.
As a member of Unite, you will have 1.4 million people on your side making you stronger as young workers.
Always remember, there is power in a union! Every worker – students, part-time, full time, casual, temporary, apprentice, trainee or contract – can join a union.
Stand up for what’s important to you.
Join Unite and other young workers like you to fight for what you deserve.
It’s that simple.

Standing Together Against Abuse
As a union, our job is simple: to protect you, to stand with you, and to make sure you’re treated with dignity and respect — in your workplace, in training, and in every part of your life.
The government’s ENOUGH campaign is a reminder of something we take seriously: abuse isn’t always loud or obvious.
It can hide behind “banter,” “just checking in,” or “I’m only trying to help.” But if someone is trying to control you, pressure you, isolate you, or make you feel small, that crosses a line.
-
You deserve better.
-
You deserve safety.
-
You deserve respect.
If something doesn’t feel right, trust yourself, talk to your unite rep., you’re never on your own.
Our strength is in standing together, calling out harmful behaviour, and making sure every apprentice has the freedom to learn, work, and grow without fear.
If you ever need us, we’re here. Always.
